Strengthening Discipline and Dialogue: Minister Engages Pointe Larue Community on Education Reform

The Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Ambassador David Pierre, together with his delegation, attended a public meeting on Saturday 11th April at the Police Academy, Pointe Larue. Organised by the Pointe Larue District, the meeting served as an important platform for residents to raise questions directly with the Minister and his team, fostering constructive dialogue between the community and education authorities. In attendance were the MNA for Anse Aux Pins District, Ms. Sandra Sultan, and the MNA for Pointe Larue District, Mr. Conrad Gabriel, who joined the discussions alongside the Minister.
The meeting focused on strengthening discipline and resilience among students, with a firm commitment to creating a safe and respectful school environment. A zero-tolerance stance was reiterated against disrespect toward teachers, drug use, and disruptive behavior, while street fights were to be treated as police matters. At the same time, the meeting emphasized a transformative approach to youth offenders, prioritizing reintegration into schools with positive values rather than punitive measures. Other key points included the need for capacity building among teachers and staff, the establishment of systems to encourage civil conversations between parents and educators, and improved communication channels between schools and headquarters.
Technology was highlighted as a vital tool for learning and talent development, with calls for structured systems to identify and nurture student skills for future use. Cultural identity was also addressed through proposals to reintroduce Creole language in schools, reinforcing national heritage and inclusivity. The role of mobile phones in schools was raised as a point of consideration, reflecting the balance between modern technology and its impact on the learning environment.
Overall, the meeting underscored a holistic vision for education reform, combining discipline, communication, technology, and cultural identity, while ensuring that community voices were heard and addressed at the highest level.
