Advancing Education, Skills, and Digital Transformation through UN Partnership

The UN Coordinator for Seychelles and Mauritius, Ms Lisa Singh, paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Education and Human Resource Development on 5th March. The meeting underscored the importance of aligning national education reforms with international cooperation frameworks, particularly the UN’s fiveyear plan built around five pillars of prosperity.
Discussions emphasized the need to strengthen basic skills, empower teachers, and advance Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a cornerstone of reform. These efforts are designed to instill discipline, enhance teaching quality, and achieve sustainable objectives over the coming five years, with the UN’s support serving as a critical enabler.
Parallel to this, strategies are being developed to strengthen the tourism value chain as a driver of job creation and socioeconomic growth. Preparing children mentally from an early age through life skills education was highlighted as essential, alongside upgrading the skills of both teachers and students. Curriculum review is underway to ensure a holistic mission that meets national objectives. Rehabilitation initiatives for youth offenders are also being prioritized, with centers such as Bon Espoir offering skills development and reintegration opportunities. This approach reflects a shift toward rehabilitation rather than punitive measures, while the construction of a major TVET school will further expand opportunities for young people.
Community collaboration and digital transformation form the third pillar of this agenda. Building on successful initiatives such as “Mobile for Good” in La Digue, efforts are being made to extend innovative digital classrooms and thematic exposures to new areas. These initiatives aim to bridge communities, foster collaboration, and prepare the country for the demands of a rapidly evolving digital landscape. By combining education reform, socioeconomic strategies, and digital innovation, the nation is positioning itself to achieve inclusive growth and sustainable development.
