SIT’s participation.
The second belt and road competition is to promote skills exchange and cooperation among partner countries, and is co-hosted by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the National Development and Reform Commission, China International Development Cooperation Agency, and the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government in China.
There were 18 skills competitions in Digital Construction, Logistics and Freight Forwarding, Electronics, Electrical Installation, Optoelectronic Technology, Information Network Cabling, Floristry, Jewellery, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Patisserie and Confectionery, Automobile Technology (New Energy), Rail Signal Control Technology, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Maintenance, Industrial Robot System Operation, Internet of Things (IOT) Installation and Debugging, Coffee Making, and Internet Marketing. Representatives from Belt and Road countries as well as member countries and regions of the World Skills International were invited to the competition. The event featured a combination of competition, conference, exhibition, and demonstration with sidelines event such as dialogues, skills showcase, skills experience, and skills exhibition. The opportunity was also used for networking, project signing, cooperation and application of the skill development outcomes.
SIT participated with a lecturer as Team Leader and a learner as Competitor in Automobile Technology (New Energy) field which focuses on repairing and maintaining various system in automobiles, including compressions ignition fuels systems, electrical systems, spark ignition engine management systems, transmission system, steering and suspension systems and engine repair maintenance. Additionally, it includes tasks such as installing and debugging power batteries, adjusting and testing drive motors and diagnosing faults in new energy vehicles.
The invitations came to SIT through the Ministry of Education. The selected learner was from National Diploma in Motor Vehicle Engineering Year 3. The class tutor and respective lecturers identified the learner based on performance, punctuality, attendance and exposure to Electric Vehicle System (EV) and Hybrid System the learner has had during WBE sessions.
The activity was fully sponsored by the Chinese Embassy and this included accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner, the trips to and from different locations and flight tickets for the participants. However, my flight ticket was funded by the Ministry of Education. The trip lasted for one week with different activities on the program. Before the competition, an intensive training was conducted by the experts which lasted for 3 days whereby the competitor, Treny Azemia, learned about the EV System and Hybrid system, diagnosing procedures and maintenance procedures. For the competition itself the participants had to perform different tasks within a certain amount of time where accuracy, precision and procedures were being assessed. Treny managed to finish in 4th place among 16 participants and he received a Medallion of Excellence certificate for his achievement.
The participants also attended educational visits to technical colleges in the region on the last day and got the chance to meet with lecturers and other experts in different fields and trades.
To conclude, the activity was a very good exposure for the learner from the Motor Vehicle department and since it is fully sponsored, in future, more departments and other PCs can be represented in the different fields and trades to promote skills exchange.
