Creole language and culture into Seychelles’ education system and tourism sector

The Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Ambassador David Pierre and the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Mrs Amanda Bernstein together with Principal Secretaries, Director Generals, and Technical Advisors, gathered on 12th May 2026, to explore how Creole language and culture can be more deeply integrated into Seychelles’ education system and tourism sector. The meeting was marked by optimism and a shared vision of celebrating Creole as a living symbol of national identity.
Leaders emphasized that introducing Creole language into the school curriculum at higher levels would empower students to express themselves confidently in their mother tongue, while also strengthening their sense of belonging. The call for new books and resources in Creole was seen as a vital step toward enriching learning of other subjects, ensuring that education remains inclusive and accessible.
Discussions also highlighted the vibrant role of Creole in shaping Seychelles’ cultural and tourism landscape. Attendees agreed that creative arts and cultural projects should be harnessed to showcase Creole heritage, offering visitors a more authentic experience of Seychellois life. Schools were identified as key platforms for heritage education, where children can learn to value and preserve their cultural roots. By weaving Creole into tourism initiatives, Seychelles can present its language not just as a means of communication, but as a lifestyle ; a reflection of the warmth, simplicity, and authenticity of its people.
The meeting concluded on a hopeful note, with consensus that strengthening Creole education and promoting cultural identity will enrich both the classroom and the tourism sector. This initiative promises to uplift communities, inspire pride in heritage, and position Seychelles as a nation that celebrates its language and culture with confidence and joy.
