The Lazare Picault Award Project, part of the Recounting Seychelles campaign, was designed to encourage schools to explore the nation’s history and culture in a creative and collaborative way. It engaged pupils from P5-P6 and students from S1-S5, and the timeline for completion ran from 15th November 2024 to 31st July 2025.
The ceremony to reward participants was held on 10th March at the National Theatre and despite challenges along the way, two secondary schools, Praslin Secondary and Belonie Secondary stood out for their resilience and dedication. In his address, Minister David Pierre praised their efforts, stating: “I wish to commend Praslin Secondary School and Belonie Secondary School for stepping forward and completing their projects within the stipulated timeframe. Your participation demonstrates resilience, teamwork, and belief in the importance of this national endeavour.”
At the ceremony, Praslin Secondary School was named Runner-Up with their project entitled “The evolution of schooling in Seychelles”, while Belonie Secondary School emerged as the Winner of the Lazare Picault Award with their project “Tanbour Kriye”. As with any competition, judging was essential, and the organisers expressed sincere gratitude to the distinguished panel of judges: Dr. Penda Choppy, Mr. Gabriel Essack, and Mrs. Cynthia Renaud. Their expertise and commitment ensured the integrity and success of the award process.
This project not only celebrated the achievements of the winning schools but also highlighted the importance of engaging young people in preserving and reflecting on the nation’s cultural and historical identity. It stands as a testament to the power of education in shaping thoughtful, informed citizens.
